The award recognizes a rising Upton High School senior who demonstrates meaningful service, strong character, and the potential to lead a community-focused project.

Rising senior status
Applicant must be entering their senior year at Upton High School.
Demonstrated service
Applicant should have a sustained record of volunteerism and community involvement during high school.
Leadership and initiative
Applicant should show evidence of leadership, initiative, or the ability to motivate and organize others in service activities.
Good standing
Applicant must be in good academic and disciplinary standing with the school.

The selection committee may consider:
Impact on the community
The extent to which the student's service has made a positive difference in Upton or the surrounding area.
Leadership and initiative
Evidence that the student has taken initiative, organized activities, or inspired others to participate.
Consistency of service
Sustained involvement over time rather than one-time participation.
Character and citizenship
Demonstration of integrity, compassion, responsibility, and respect for others.

Examples may include, but are not limited to:
Volunteering with the senior citizen center
Mentoring or tutoring younger students
Assisting with community events and fundraisers
Participating in park, trail, or community beautification projects
Supporting local nonprofit, civic, or faith-based organizations
Helping with food drives, clothing drives, or other charitable efforts
Contributing to environmental stewardship and conservation projects
Award disclaimer: The Selection Committee reserves the right not to present an award in any year if applicants do not meet the standards established for the Melvin & Janice Douglas Family Community Service & Leadership Award.
Total Award Value = $5,500
The recipient will receive:
·$4,500 award upon selection as the annual recipient
$500 Senior Legacy Project Grant to support the planning and implementation of a community service initiative during the recipient’s senior year and work with other students to encourage participation
$500 completion award upon successful completion of the legacy project and submission of final project summary
The selected student receives both financial recognition and the opportunity to lead a Senior Legacy Project.
During senior year, the recipient is encouraged to work with a community partner to plan and complete a project that responds to a clearly identified local need. The project is designed to give the recipient practical experience in leadership, budgeting, communication and community collaboration.
